Default Disney blocks Peter Pan and Dumbo after highlighting 'harmful stereotypes'...

Disney has blocked children under seven from watching Peter Pan and Dumbo after highlighting "harmful stereotypes" in classic cartoons.

The company’s streaming platform offers Kids Profile accounts with age restrictions in place which were updated in October to address issues with racial stereotypes.

Children’s Disney+ accounts now block animated classics like Peter Pan, Dumbo and The Aristocats for breaching content advisories, it has been reported.

Swiss Family Robinson has also been made unavailable after Disney brought in new restrictions for its subscription service on the advice of experts, according to reports.

In October the company added content advisories which warned viewers these programmes include “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures".

The warning added: "These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now."

The children’s films have been removed from Kids Profiles, but are still available for viewing on adult accounts.

Concerns were raised about the term “redskins” being used in reference to Native Americans in the 1953 release Peter Pan.

The Aristocats, brought out in 1970, features a Siamese cat called Shun Gon which some viewers have found to portray stereotypes of East Asian People.

The 1941 cartoon Dumbo has been accused of caricaturing African Americans with several characters, including black workers who claim they “throw our pay away” while toiling to build a circus.

Disney last year moved to address “negative depictions” and “mistreatment of people or cultures" following Black Lives Matter protests, and has now removed some of its older content from children’s profiles, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Disney has not commented on the changes, but a statement on the company's website states it is: “Committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.

It adds: “We can't change the past, but we can acknowledge it.”

Other Disney productions came under increased scrutiny last year as depictions of race were reexamined following the death of George Floyd.

The Jungle Book, released in 1968, received a content warning because the ape King Louie sings Dixieland jazz style and is shown as lazy and lacking linguistic skills.

The 1955 film Lady and the Tramp likewise was given a warning message due to the animation including Siamese cats portraying Asian stereotypes, and heavily-accented dogs portray stereotypes of Mexico and Russia.

The 1946 release Song of the South is not available at all on Disney platforms due to their portrayals of black people as happy in the cotton fields.

how utterly stupid. Just put a trigger warning in a title card which show up for a few seconds before the films start.

"Harmful" my foot, absolutely no-one is harmed by a cartoon.

Hmm. I don't think there's any harm in kids watching these films but I do think it should be with an adult to provide context (not that all will). This isn't censorship though; they're essentially just changing them from "U" rated to "PG" and there's nothing wrong with that, at the end of the day it will be parent's decision whether or not to let kids watch them, which seems like the right route forward really.

But they're not banned - and at the end of the day, isn't whether or not something is harmful to a child the decision of that child's parents? Honestly that's all this move is doing, making it parent's choice. I don't see how anyone can argue with that.

...I think that it was always going to be one of those...Can’t win for losing, situations/decisions...to have left it without any restriction of it being a parental decision, then it would leave open for it being accused of not fitting with the ‘ethics of Disney’ and showing some irresponsibility...whichever way, I feel there would be criticism...

...it’s obviously important for children to see historic stereotypes but it allows for parents to make that decision if they don’t feel it appropriate for their child to learn by seeing them...

...maybe the headline could have been worded better to relay blocking/restricting to parental guidance...rather than ‘banned’, which they aren’t being...

...but that’s the whole point, Kaz...it’s absolutely leaving it there for the parent to decide whether they want their children to watch...but in drawing attention to stereotyped content...?..it’s also highlighting if a parent wants to watch with their child, to guide their child through any possible discussions etc...

Leave Louie, alone.
It takes a special kind of racist to look at an ape in a film full of talking animals, and immediately think of black people.

also Ammi you do have a point, and only if we would all learn from history, we could make the world a better place

if only we could all get rid of far right, right wing, those who want to silence us, the PC world needs to be gone

sorry, i am kinda more easily stressed up than usual these times

my world order would be ''no more PC world, apart from getting rid of hate groups which only leads to more nastiness''

i guess Dumbo, Peter Pan can be ticked as educational then, maybe a trigger warning is ok enough, i mean Roots doesn't need to be banned either since that is educational how we can learn slavery is wrong

...it’s not so much a trigger warning, Nicky...it’s more, putting the choice/control with the parents ...not only in their child watching or not, but also highlighting some things/stereotypes etc that they themselves may not be aware of...so they may feel it’s something they want to watch with their child to bring up any discussion points...

...I know it’s such a stressful/anxious time atm, Nicky.....I was teasing you, it was wrong to do that...I apologise...

..it’s good though I think to give that control to parents and also to have potential discussion points highlighted as well...it’s not something that every parent would feel the need and that’s fine too as it isn’t restricting as such, just giving more opportunity for parent/child watching together...or if a parent does feel strongly, to not have their child watch at all...obviously a parent can still choose to have their child watch without a parent as well ...

They overprice their computers and sell them to people who don't know what they're looking at, and could get a better PC/Laptop in 5 minutes online, for 2/3 the price... so I'm fully on board with this course of action.

...just to add also...do parents want to make the decision themselves what is ‘harmful’ to their own child(ren)...or do they want that decision made by others...it surely gives more freedom to a parent and takes nothing away...
