Default Ministers to take charge of the NHS in the biggest reform in 9 years

Quote:
Boris Johnson is planning to reverse controversial reforms of the NHS in England, a leaked document reveals.

The changes would see a reduced role for the private sector, while a system of contracts being put out to tender, with health groups sometimes competing against each other, would be scrapped.

The draft policy paper also says the health secretary would take more direct control over NHS England.

It would sweep away reforms introduced by David Cameron's government in 2012.

The 2012 Health and Social Care Act, brought in by the coalition government led by Conservative prime minister Mr Cameron, alongside his Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, put NHS England at arms length from the secretary of state.

It gave more control over budgets to GPs and other clinicians, while greater competition with the private sector was encouraged.

However, the changes were controversial and attracted criticism from opposition MPs and professional bodies representing doctors, nurses and other NHS workers.

Social care reform needed within a year - NHS boss11 charts on the problems facing the NHS

The government's draft White Paper says there will be "enhanced powers of direction for the government…to ensure that decision makers at national level are effectively held to account".

Instead of a system which required competitive tendering for contracts - sometimes involving private companies - the paper says the NHS and local authorities will be left to run services and told to collaborate with each other.

What is described as needless bureaucracy standing in the way of NHS organisations will be removed under the plans.

There will also be more focus on GPs, hospitals and social care services working together to improve patient care.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said changes were being considered to drive forward the integration of health and care services and details would be set out in due course.

Looks like they are moving away from the idea of Privatisation and planning to put the NHS on a level that it was before the last reforms in 2012

Those reforms done by Cameron after he'd promised they'd never happen in the 2010 election.
Was the thing I most distrusted him on, and why I voted Lib Dem for my sins.

Because, he did deceive and did the reforms with the votes too of the Lib Dems in the coalition.
A very costly set of reforms too which caused problems for years after.

So IF, and I won't hold my breath, IF those reforms can now be reformed again I'd in principle welcome that.
However, what's the cost now of reforming again the obviously wrong and costly reform done by Cameron and Clegg.

So are these new reforms going to again take away funding that could be used for care in the NHS rather than just wasting money on yet more cosmetic reforming again..

I'm sorry, Cameron lost my trust on the NHS, the Con party lost my respect too.
On this vital issue this is to me.

Sadly, I really don't believe a word Johnson says.
I'll temper that though, in that I am starting to think Matt Hancock has had a bit of an eye opener with the NHS, I think I may have been a little unfair towards Matt Hancock actually.

Unlike with Hunt.
Who once out the Cabinet, suddenly found a critical voice against the government, however he was a disgrace all through the junior Doctors pay issue as Health Secretary..

I'd welcome more investment in the care aspect of the NHS, if it's done genuinely.
This will mean in a decade 2 major reforms of the NHS will have been possibly done.
2 unnecessary reforms with the second one it seems only reversing the first reforms.

What a calamitous waste of time and money.
Although, those reforms done by the Coalition were an utter disaster.
Promised by neither party of the coalition government too..
Yet their power misused to do them.

I'd like to know in advance the cost however of this new thinking of reversing the 2012 reforms.

People never learn when it comes to accepting Johnson and his media mouthpieces at face value.

The same guy that plastered £350m per week for the NHS after brexit, across a big red bus.

as i said in the covid thread, we must surely learn from the brexit fiasco not to trust a sound bite.
