It’s unprofessional because of his previous friendship/personal relationship with her, not because he “gets het up”. It’s called conflict of interests, and it’s not a particularly difficult concept to understand, for anyone, let alone an experienced journalist, so again, he knows fine well his conduct was unprofessional.
