The fact that people were laughing means it was seen as a series of jokes

The laughter is all men and given that it was Cambridge in the late 80's/early90's, you can be pretty sure it was a room full of white blokes. Not the best measure of whether or not the racist and sexist jokes being told would be "seen as jokes" by everyone else.
