Ministers intervened to defend the free speech of Tzipi Hotovely who faced a large crowd of student protesters on Tuesday evening after a talk on Middle East affairs.
Police officers fought to hold back students outside the LSE campus venue demanding that she be “no-platformed” amid chants of “Shame on you”. Protesters accused her of having “advocated for settler colonialism” and engaged in Islamophobic rhetoric.
After the peaceful 90-minute debate had finished, videos on social media showed activists from the Palestinian society and others gathered around the exit, some jeering and at least one attempting to lunge at the diplomat.
LSE student leaders said in an open letter that calls from activists to smash the windows of the ambassador’s car were “shocking and odious” as they came on the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of the Broken Glass.
