the trouble that NZ and China have is that if they lock down the moment they get an infection they will just go into an infinite cycle of lockdowns. I cant see that doing the economies or mental health any favours for the foreseeable future.

We dont know what will happen with variants in the future, but governments have the tools now to be a lot smarter than just locking everything down

NZ yes, China is so huge that (assuming they genuinely can contain it) they could feasibly lock down large areas/regions at a time in an endless cycle without ever locking down the whole country.

Of course with Omicron their chances of actually containing it are quite slim.
