No he's not, because of M.A.D and the fact that Putin, as much as people try to paint him as such, is NOT insane. However without M.A.D there'd be much more scope for traditional armed conflict over Ukraine.

Well, he is insane actually.

Not just MAD, but the general stigma of using it, regardless of whether the US sent one back or not. Putin would be forced out of power by his own government and people, if not assassinated. He doesn’t want that to happen.

Putin must have some powerful backup in the knowledge that other countries will come to the defence of Ukraine. His threat to those countries today are either just a scare tactic or he really has some atrocity up his sleeve…and if he hasn’t then he is going to make himself look very stupid…all very unnerving.
