This Witch doesn't burn

85-year-old Donal Rogers, a retired Garda, has spoken of his heartbreak at the prospect of having his beloved dog forcibly put down.
Donal lives in a quiet area, and shares his home with a 9 inch tall female Jack Russell named Kim. Until recently Donal and his beloved pet enjoyed a simple life together spending long periods in the garden or Donal’s car. About two months ago Kim bit one of a small group of passers by outside Donal’s house. “My little dog was lying in the sun on the front lawn of my house on a Sunday morning”. He continued ”Strangers came down the road, walking, and she ran out on the road, and she nipped the person on the leg”. Donal’s house is at the top of a hill on a very quiet road surrounded mostly by fields. He says he immediately apologised to the woman’s husband who came and knocked at the door after the incident. He says, “I offered to take her to hospital, but she refused to travel with me”. The woman, who is in her 60s, was taken to hospital by a neighbour of Donal’s and had her wound treated before being sent home. Sometime later Rogers says he received a court summons and that during subsequent hearings the woman demanded that Kim be destroyed. He says he offered to compensate her financially, as the dog means a lot to him and has no history of biting or other unruly behaviour, but that the woman did not relent. He says that his pleas have fallen on deaf ears and that an order for Kim to be put down was granted. Donal, who lives alone, has vowed to keep fighting to save Kim saying “I’d miss her very much if she was taken away from me.” “I bought her as a pup, and I reared her myself, and I gave 100 euros for her” Rogers says Kim sleeps at the foot of his bed at night and is great company for him, especially in winter. https://gript.ie/roscommon-man-fight...C0eL8q9lHknbNY what horrible people to bring this to court

If your dog is so badly trained it runs out of your garden to purposefully bite someone then sorry, but something should be done about it, it shouldn’t just be glossed over because it’s small

Yes, he is stuck with the Law
He did the right thing to offer to take the lady to hospital. It is a shame, Maybe if he put his dog on a long lead it would not have happened he would not be at this stage |

I agree with Liam actually, I don't think the dog should be put down but I don't think it's fair to be calling the woman who was bitten names either. I think maybe the man should have been ordered to muzzle the dog when she's not in the house
I do feel sorry for the man though, my father in laws dog died recently I swear his own health has gone downhill ever since, elderly people living alone become really dependent on their pets. It's a sad situation all round

Shouldn't be put down. Why is the women so insistent it should be put down? Especially as the owner offered her compensation. These things happens. It's not the end of the world.

jack russell's are notorious biters, so if they are not fenced off or muzzled they are a problem. It could have easily been a small child that it bit

Personally I don't think that the Dog should be put down.
But without meaning to sound heartless, if the owner had've just put a leash on the Dog when outside then this wouldn't have happened.

Yep, my mother was bitten by a Jack Russell who was on a lead as she walked passed it when she was a teenager, she's had a lifelong fear of dogs because of it

Our little Granddog is a Jack Russel.
You have more chance of being loved to death than ever get bitten by him. Terriers are known to be territorial and will defend their owners and homes, the dog won’t understand that outside of the gate is not their territory. A caution to the owner should be suffice if it is the first time the dog has bitten somebody, especially if it was a nip to the ankle. |

A tiny wee Jack Russell puppy came bounding up to me and my dog today and the women who owned it was miles away and shreiking as she feared my Staffy would kill it, I think, but my girly loves alll dogs so she was pleased and then her other JRT caught up and i was able to grab the little puppy as there was a road. Then she proceeded to give the puppy a treat
Lovely wee dogs |

I would not have a wee tiny dog like that off a lead in an open public space as an Alsation would kill it in one rag, as would a Border Collie that does not get enough exercise (ie most you see)

I think the owner should be given a warning....then if it happens again then the dog may be put down. These dogs are not killers but they are known for nipping.
It was probably a one off incident...he offered compensation and the lady a lift but she has still chosen to go down this path. Pets are a massive comfort to the elderly...so shame on her. |

People wouldn’t be so blasé about this if it had gotten out and bitten a kid, if a dog is so poorly trained that it escapes the garden and bites a random adult, it could have very easily been a child instead.
A poorly trained dog that attacks without provocation can not be trusted, yes it’s a sad story, a lonely old man who’s only comfort is this little dog, but if he can’t control his dog, he shouldn’t have it, give the dog another chance and the story might end differently next time I’m afraid

I’ve had two Jack Russells and honestly as much as I love them, they’re CRAZY.
They can go from being super sweet to snarling at you at the drop of a hat. I’d been nipped a few times by mine yet they were raised exactly the same as our other dogs who were completely fine, loving dogs (my 6 stone massive Bulldog has never so much as growled at me, strangers or other animals in her life - almost 12 years. The sweetest dog. I find with dogs it’s the smaller ones you have to be careful around (JRT, Chihuahuas etc) no the big mean looking ones, they’re usually lovely). They’re just, by nature, quite unpredictable and very temperamental. Extremely possessive and territorial too I’ve found. Last edited by LaLaLand; 02-07-2022 at 02:50 AM. |
