Default 70% of Pubs do not expect to survive, winter as energy costs soar

[Independent brewers and pub operators
warn of ‘doomsday scenario’ unless
government takes urgent action]

[Britain’s independent brewers have
urged ministers to step in to save
the sector, as research revealed
more than 70% of pubs do not expect
to survive the winter if nothing is done
to ease energy costs.

In a letter to the chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi,
independent brewers on Tuesday
called for immediate government intervention,
warning, a once thriving cottage industry
was now facing “grave uncertainty”.
They said the impact of surging energy bills
was being compounded by a fall in sales
as households seek to save money,
shortages of equipment such as kegs,
cans and CO2 gas, and a poor hop
harvest pushing up prices.]

Yes, China's Covid-19
started this decline.

That’s not good. I’m partial to Saturday evenings in ’spoons watching the world go by with a few Heinekens in-hand.

I detest pubs so it’s no great loss to me ..

If there’s fewer drunk blokes / women swearing , fighting , vomiting in our communities then maybe it’s a good thing

As a nation have trouble with alcohol , I’d say

i think some independent pubs will fold and the chains may well close some of their loss making pubs, but it wont be 70%. We are in an economic crises, every business outside of energy is suffering. it's hardly surprising that people will have less spare cash to spend on boozy nights out

Not just the energy crisis. I know four people who became so ridden with massive debt due to Covid. One guy I know had a successful business but got so much in debt trying to keep afloat he owed over £40,000 on credit cards. He had to admit defeat in July and is going bankrupt and is now on benefits. Very sad for him. He's hard working with three kids. Tragic. But not his fault. It's this country. It's basically fooked up.

I'm not surprised. We will all have trouble paying our bills

I’m worried about the number of suicides that might eventuate this autumn. Psychological well-being is not going to be great.

I’ll happily drink to that, still. I’ll happily toast a Bombay Sapphire to that.
