I could tell the caller didn't think it was wrong what they said,so yeah it isn't always from a place of hate ...but clearly ignorance especially the older generation. |

The older generation wernt allowed to use the word black back in my day.. It's like being told diesels the best thing to be then told no, it's not. It can be very confusing. |

I know some people still use the term 'poc' .... but it's about context ,and I guess they also use that to describe a non white person in general. |

This comment alone shows the lack of progress. I have personally explained this on a number of occasions.
The word 'coloured' is a word that was used under Apartheid and Jim Crow to seperate people of colour. Sections were separated into 'whites' and 'non-whites' or 'whites' and 'coloureds' Thus, is frowned upon. I need say no more than that. Whether you like it or not, thats it. Look thru my many times explaining this. ![]() Shame cuz ten years ago this debate was actually a debate.

Yes. This is how it’s been since the ’80s (likewise for half-caste vs. mixed-race). Most people who say “coloured” have good intentions but for anyone who still uses that term it’s a habit for them to get out of, really.

Gold heart That's rather patronising in itself... The way you are calling black people they....when you said they're..thats blind racism imo.something this old woman is being accused 9ff. Last edited by Beso; 02-12-2022 at 07:24 PM. |

cant say BAME now it seems
![]() Council ditches the term 'BAME' and will start using the phrase 'global majority' to refer to black and Asian people as part of drive to be more 'inclusive and diverse' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...term-BAME.html absolute farce |

'half cast' is another awful one , you can really tell the old generations stuck in their ways.... if they still use that outdated term.

Yeah when I was a kid I heard some people say it , it's still a daft word to describe someone's race . Even if it isn't meant in a 'offensive' way .

On a similar token you do get black people sometimes refer to Asian-owned Afro-Asian stores in the U.K. as ‘paki shop/s’ and again to me that one just is. It’s literally short-hand for Pakistan and left to me I wouldn’t say it always has to be associated with negative tidings. British-Asians don’t have anything like the same historical association with racial abuse as black people so I wouldn’t bother going against someone’s defence for using that term innocently. Especially when it’s also even people of colour who use it. |
