Bruce did come across as to more playing it down and didn't seem happy it had even been brought up.

She often does that and really her input often spoils the continuity of this programme now.

tbh if she'd have let the "wife beater" remark go unclarified she could also have been accused of bias.

Well not really.
The question was about Johnson putting his Father forward for a Knighthood.

So the discussion of was that right and should his Father have one should open up to both why he could and why he shouldn't.

I think assaulting a spouse is a valid criticism to raise on that issue.

Maybe the BBC then shouldn't have allowed the question at all but they did.
The questions are selected before the programne is recorded after all.

I'm the last person who'd downplay spousal abuse, I know what it can do a woman (and her offspring) ... but it's still such a big accusation it needs presenting clearly.

By mentioning that his friends said it was a "one-off" does seem like minimizing, I won't deny. But it's still part of the story.

She was minimizing it definitely.
There's not really an excuse for that since it is known it happened as she confirmed from contacts of him.
One off or not, it should be concerning that he could be even considered for a Knighthood.

I think the complicating factor is that she hasn't spoken about it herself, it's only come via others who know them, and thus if they're seen to be reporting it as factual but they both deny it, it could be a bit of a minefield legally. They do have to be clear that it came from friends. I'm not sure why she had to add the "and it was a one off" part - who cares if it was once? Once is too many.

Of course he shouldn't be up for it if there's even a whiff of something like this around him. That said... it didn't stop them knighting Sean Connery and he was proudly announcing it.
