What does make me suspicious of this guy's character is we haven't heard anything about the 16 year old trying to break into his home, or having a weapon on him that you could then argue might've scared the Perp.

No, it paints his ex wife's picture of his character. Why would you automatically believe her? What proof has she shown you of her accusations that's made you believe her?

That's why they print stuff like that, because people will just take is as gospel and not need any proof when they want something to happen.
