Default Movies Appreciation Thread.

Basically like with the other appreciation threads, I'm going to keep editing my list of Movies that I've enjoyed over the years, plus more recent Movies that I've liked.

And like with the other threads, alternative lists and opinions are welcome.

Now let my ego commence.

Seriously though here's the list.

1. Blade

Genres - Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Superhero

I haven't seen the sequels yet, but I really enjoyed this particular Film, Snipes as Blade and Dorff as Deacon Frost were the show stealers for me.

2. Tron

Genres - Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Again I haven't watched the sequel yet, but I did enjoy this Film from the Tron franchise.

Obviously don't go into it expecting a 2023 budget and thankfully it isn't written like a 2023 Hollywood script.

But it does have likable characters, and an interesting concept that imo is better fleshed out in Tron: Uprising, but this Film definitely deserves credit for creating such an interesting world that sadly hasn't had enough done with it imo.

3. Die Hard

Genres - Action, Thriller

Another one where I need to watch the sequels as I had such a blast with this Film.

It knew what it was and it wasn't ashamed of it, and it was really good at what it was doing.

I bet that the critics at the time would probably dismiss it because it wasn't a sophisticated Drama, but it thankfully wasn't trying to be that as it wouldn't suit the Film's tone and style, even though the critics never understand that with Films like this.

A great Film imo.

4. Minority Report

Genres - Action, Crime, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller

5. Sonic The Hedgehog

Genres - Action, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Just take it for what it is, it's not meant to be the next LOTR or whatever other big epic sagas you want to throw out there, it's just a fun family Film.

And imo an extra blast for Sonic die hards.

6. Iron Man

Genres - Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Superhero

7. Monsters, Inc

Genres - Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy

8. Mama

Genres - Fantasy, Horror, Thriller

Again ignore the Movie critics who just want everything to be a "sophisticated Drama" this is meant to be an eerie Horror Movie, and personally I feel that it mostly succeeded at that.

Like any Movie there's imperfections, but nothing earth shattering imo.

It's a worthwhile Film for any Horror fan to check out.

9. Sword Of The Stranger

Genres - Action, Adventure, Historical

A brilliant Movie imo, even MAL agrees with an 8.26/10 and I don't always necessarily agree with all of their scores on Anime products, but I do on this occasion.

Honestly check it out, it won't disappoint.

And just to add I honestly can't believe Bones made this, don't get me wrong I like a lot of Bones Studios content, but they normally make very different Animes to Sword Of The Stranger, or at least they do nowadays.

10. Blade Of The Phantom Master

Genres - Action, Fantasy

This is a controversial Film because the Manga fans say that the Manga is way better (which I don't doubt tbf) but as someone that hasn't read the Manga I really enjoyed the Film.

But then I like tragic stories of this type, so maybe I'm being biased, who knows.

All I can say is that I really enjoyed the Film, which I'll gladly take.

11. The Silence Of The Lambs

Genres - Crime, Drama, Thriller

12. Monster House

Genres - Animation, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Mystery

13. Blame!

Genres - Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, Mecha, Psychological

I have yet to read the Manga to Blame! But I really liked the Film for what it was setting out to do.

Apparently there is meant to be a sequel in development, hopefully it'll be just as interesting as the first Film was imo.

14. Psycho-Pass: The Movie

Genres - Action, Sci-Fi, Detective, Military

I think that this is a very good Film (but then I am biased towards Psycho-Pass) however for it to make sense to a new viewer, you at least need to see the first Season, preferably Season 2 as well as there are some new characters that will be going forward in the franchise, but the most important thing to be able to follow Kogami's side of the story would be to complete Season 1 at the very least.

15. Psycho-Pass: Sinners Of The System Case.1 - Crime And Punishment

Genres - Action, Sci-Fi, Detective, Psychological

This is the next installment after the first Psycho-Pass Movie.

Tbh the Sinners Of The System trilogy may be my favourite Psycho-Pass material after the iconic first Season.

Don't get me wrong I always enjoy Psycho-Pass, but like any series you will always have favourites and least favourite installments.

I actually don't know if my opinion is controversial with the Sinners Of The System trilogy, but either way I just really enjoyed it.

I couldn't find a trailer for the Film, so I've linked the Movie's OP instead.

16. Psycho-Pass: Sinners Of The System Case.2 - First Guardian

Genres - Action, Sci-Fi, Detective, Psychological

17. Psycho-Pass: Sinners Of The System Case.3 - On The Other Side Of Love And Hate

Genres - Action, Sci-Fi, Detective, Psychological

18. Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector

Genres - Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Detective, Psychological

19. The Grudge

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

I did a rewatch of this Film recently, and still creeped me out.

A very good Film imo.

20. Sinister

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

I've yet to see the sequel, but I really enjoyed this Film.

21. The Boy

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

22. The Batman

Genres - Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller, Superhero

23. Psycho

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

24. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Genres - Action, Fantasy

25. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg Of The King

Genres - Action, Adventure, Drama, Dark Fantasy, Horror, Military

Berserk is always high quality imo.

Oh and I watched the Movie subbed, but I couldn't find a decent trailer from the subbing community.

26. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle For Doldrey

Genres - Action, Adventure, Drama, Dark Fantasy, Horror, Military

27. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent

Genres - Action, Adventure, Drama, Dark Fantasy, Horror, Military

The best Berserk Movie imo, but it only really works effectively after you've watched the first two Berserk Movies.

28. The Incredibles

Genres - Animation, Action, Adventure, Family

29. Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Genres - Action, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

30. Paddington

Genres - Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy

31. Alice In Wonderland (1951 Movie)

Genres - Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Musical

Imo it deserves a much higher score than a 7.3 on IMDB, because imo it is one of (if not) the best and most creative of the Disney Animated Movies.

It's a very iconic Movie in my view.

32. Hush (2016 Movie)

Genres - Horror, Thriller

33. Tau

Genres - Sci-Fi, Thriller

34. War Of The Worlds

Genres - Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Imo way better than the Gabriel Byrne version.

I liked the tension and survival aspects much stronger in the Film versus the TV Show, which imo felt more like a normal Drama rather than a "surviving an attack from a foreign enemy" vibe that it should've been going for.

I get that War Of The Worlds isn't the most original idea in the world, but it is a very well crafted Film at what it's going for imo.

I haven't watched the BBC series nor have I read the Book, so I can't compare those versions with the Movie version.

35. Would You Rather

Genres - Horror, Thriller

I think that it's IMDB score and Metacritic score is really harsh.

Yes it's a Gore Porn Movie, but it is much more psychological than some people might give it credit for, and ultimately it was actually entertaining, something that some Movies do forget to be sometimes.

I'm not saying it's a 10/10 Movie, but it's definitely better than a 5.7 like it's scored on IMDB.

36. Akira

Genres - Action, Adventure, Horror, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Military

What a good Movie.

37. Spirited Away

Genres - Adventure, Supernatural

If you like Alice In Wonderland then you'll have a very good shot at liking Spirited Away as they're both very eccentric stories with an Isekai-esque bent to them.

Plus No Face is a creepy looking ****er, so if you like your characters looking weird then you'll be at home with him.

38. Captain America: The First Avenger

Genres - Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Superhero

39. Over The Hedge

Genres - Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family

40. Cars

Genres - Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Sport

41. Kung Fu Panda

Genres - Animation, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy

42. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Genres - Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

I watched it on Sky Cinema a couple of days ago, and tbh I really enjoyed the Film.

It actually felt like old school fiction with the adventurous spirit, Comedic tone and unashamed to be Fantasy approach.

Obviously this Film won't be for everyone, but if you're looking for something that tells a good story, with a less dour tone, and as I've already said a high dose of Fantasy then D&D is a strong recommendation imo.

And just to add, Simon was my favourite character in the Film, he made me laugh.

43. Scream V

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

44. Scream VI

Genres - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

45. Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya

Genres - Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Samurai, Parody, Historical

Yes there's a lot of different tags to this Film, but that's because Gintama as a series has many different sides to itself.

If I'm not mistaken this originally was going to be the original ending for the Gintama Anime series (hence the title) but it was still so popular (especially in Japan) that it got renewed for more installments to come.

Honestly a fantastic Movie.

46. Gintama: The Final

Genres - Action, Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi, Historical, Parody, Samurai

Without meaning to keep being up Gintama's butt, it is one of those rare examples of a series in Anime that ended in a flawless fashion, this Film has everything that you would expect to be in Gintama, plus the Film resolves all of it's ongoing storylines in a respectable fashion.

Imo this is definitely a 10/10 Movie, although you do have to know at least a little bit about the characters to truly appreciate it imo.

47. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train

Genres - Action, Fantasy, Historical, Battle Shounen

Controversially within the Demon Slayer fandom I wouldn't say that it's a masterpiece.

However I would say that it's a fun Film, and the Nightmare On Elm Street concept is a really good idea imo, admittedly with it's own spin put on it, but I can definitely see the inspiration behind the basic idea of the villain's abilities.

My main flaw would be
Spoiler:

to give Rengoku such a big role where he is competing with the regulars for screen time, just to kill him off.

But in the grand scheme of things, you can watch far worse in the Anime industry than Demon Slayer, it gets the basics right which isn't that common in Anime nowadays.

48. Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society

Genres - Mystery, Sci-Fi, Detective, Mecha, Military

That’s quite a varied list !!

I would need years to consider and then organise my top ten

I loved the sequel. I hope they make a third one, or continue it on TV.

Really enjoyed Tron: Uprising too.
