The US will never give up on its right to bear arms. But it's clear the rules need to be much tighter. Having said that, not sure tighter laws would have applied to this firearms instructor.

Switzerland has a really high rate of gun ownership, around two million guns in a population of around 8 million. You can own a semi-automatic with not much trouble, and fully automatic firearms with a special license. Yet they have much fewer murders by firearm per head of capita and haven't had a mass shooting for decades. The difference between gun ownership in the US and Switzerland, mainly, I think, is that the Swiss take training very seriously whereas in some US states you might get a free gun when you open a bank account.
