Hilary Mantel asked: “Is the monarchy a suitable institution for a grown up nation?” Her mistake was to assume that Britain is populated by adults. We behave with childish carelessness towards institutions that a mature human being would respect, raising the question of whether or not we deserve to keep them.
Time has also proven her use of the word “perfect” to describe Kate to be sadly inaccurate. We now know that she’s as fragile as the rest of us. If anything, it would have been better to call her “super normal”.
Britain embraced Kate when she married William because she embodied the humdrum, middle-of-the-road, middle-class values of sobriety and self-possession. What a change from Diana or Fergie. What a contrast to the bridezilla to come, aka Meghan Markle. Kate has never gone off the rails or, if she has – because we all sometimes do – she has never banged on about it obsessively on television, displaying her traumas and anxieties like a flag of pride.
Perhaps the Princess’s most revolutionary act in this age of over-sharing has been to leave us in peace. I say we owe it to her to do the same.
