it really depends, there is obvious escalation from iran, lets not forget that iran were behind the initial attack last year, so all this talk of an embassy being attacked is nonsense. It wasn't even the embassy that was attacked, it was a military building in the compound next to the embassy.

I'm not sure that Israel can leave it as is without responding

Israel did directly kill some of their top generals though, it's more of a blatant attack than Iran's involvement in October 7th which at least they can deny

What should benefit hopes of de-escalation now is that none of the UN security powers want the war to expand so neither Israel nor Iran will have much support from their allies. The danger is that neither country cares about that given that they can both act erratically
