He was raised in the UK by his grandmother and he's always said that his grandmother told him that prior to WW2 Poland was the most tolerant country in Europe.
In the UK however, as a small child, he was advised not to tell his school mates that he was Jewish as there would be repercussions.

Whereas...my grandmother who survived the deathcamps, just, found nothing but acceptance in the UK and became a very proud Brit.
