Default Did you get ‘pocket money’ as a child?….

…and if you did, how much pocket money did you get…was it given per chore and dependant on what chores you did or was it just a general weekly allowance etc…?…were you a spender/were you a saver or a bit of both…?…

….I’m not after stealing your pocket money, I was just reading an article about pocket money ‘rates’ in 2024’, which will obviously have inflated a bit since all of us oldies were kids…I’ll link the whole article but this is what it’s stating…or giving as some figures …

£5.68 for a six-year-old
£24.71 for a 17-year-old

I did get pocket money and usually spent it on magazines, plus my dad always got me a quarter of mint imperials when he went to the newsagents.

Yes, but not weekly. Not a fixed amount.

Like if there was something I wanted to buy that was inexpensive, my mother would give me the money.

No just bits and bobs here and there and then a few quid when visiting relatives.

Always remember being asked that in school by a teacher and being singled out for not getting any, almost ridiculed (by the teacher!!) so my Mam went in and almost decked her.

I was offered the option of getting a weekly amount but my mum said that would be it ...if I spent it and then wanted to do something with friends etc but had nothing left it would be tough. I decided to not have a regular amount and be able to ask my mum if I needed something.

.

Not that I can remember.
Not a set amount, but we were given money if we wanted to go anywhere or do anything.
Our two were given a monthly allowance then their grandad uses to give them a fiver a week each. But we obviously bought them treats etc.

£2 a week from about the ages of 11-13. A group of friends would go up the Shopping Centre every Saturday, it's amazing how far you can make £2 stretch when it's all you have. Probably the equivalent of a fiver now I'm talking 99/00.

I think around 14 ish i was getting a tenner a week off my dad, then I started working at 15 in a Scaffold yard and earned my own money. £80 a week for 3 days work. Though iwas rich

I never really asked for much tbh.

I mainly got money when it was my Birthday or Christmas.

My folks used to give me the family allowance payment, which was about £12/wk at the start and around £17/wk at the end.

I'd also get thrown some cash as and when I needed it.
