He was a samurai. He's been called a retainer by those that wish to diminish the fact he's in the game. I think it's weird that it would even be an issue. Let's just say he was a Slave; adding some richness doesn't detract from the product.
In the DLC for AC Valhalla, I played as Odin and fought werewolves. It's not a historically accurate game series, and nor has it ever claimed to be. It just sprinkles in historical people, which does add a layer of immersion at times.
