They missed a real opportunity there to be honest, to encompass the choice in the first game into the gameplay itself. Don't ask the question of which choice was made - simply make it BOTH - and that the choice Max made created two alternate realities. Have it that Max's power this time around includes the ability to jump back and forth between the two realities (and can even bring items along). Find things in one reality that can be used to solve puzzles in the other. Etc.
Maybe a little too close to Alan Wake 2 I suppose.
