Indeed - my dad helped us move house in his mid-60's and was lugging furniture around with me like he would have at any other time I can remember. A couple of years later we were out to dinner with them and in my head I was thinking "fck, I would NEVER ask him to do something like that now and would be really worried about his health if he tried". Like you say it's like he went from middle-aged to an old man over night.

You say that sarcastically but there is genuinely (for most people) a huge and evident leap from "old" to "elderly" that happens around 80, similar to what happens in the "early" years I guess.

A two-year difference up until about age 15 or 16 is huge and obvious. In the middle the gap is far less evident (depending on lifestyle you'd sometimes be hard pressed to see any difference between a healthy 45 year old and an unhealthy 30 year old).

But then at the late stages, yeah, you can have someone seeming quite bright/present still in their late 70's and totally gone (or tbqfh - dead) in their early 80's. Elderliness/Frailty, once it starts, sets in FAST.
