…the crowd sizes are completely irrelevant as well because it just all becomes part of the ‘presidential campaign race’ game they play…mine’s bigger than yours, no mine is…yours only appears bigger because it isn’t real/yes it is/no it isn’t…lol, lol, lol….

…the only thing that’s relevant is who will win that race and sit in the big White House chair and I don’t think in the U.K. that we ever have such a clear view of that…Campaign rallies and their attendance vary so much because every state is like a separate country size for us so it’s hard for us to equate our own politics on the run up to elections etc…

the american political system is fascinating when federal and states are all lumped together.

Walz is only 60 but looks about 85.

Ageism isn't right but in politics how you look and present yourself is very important.

Why did Harris pick him? He's not even good at speeches.

The crowd sizes only show who can draw a crowd... which really has nothing to do with voter intention. The vast majority of voters aren't in any "crowd".

Nigel Farage can draw a crowd. It's just because the type of people who are politically interested in someone like Nigel Farage are the sort of rabble who will go out and see him in person. At the end of the day, Farage drawing a bigger crowd than someone like Sunak or Starmer doesn't mean real voters are going to vote Reform over Labour or Tory, as we have seen. People still think it matters, though, for some reason, and I guess it does, but only for virality and marketing to casual voters.

The US is slightly different because the presidential elections are so binary - it's one or t'other and they tend to be very 50/50 at all times, so Trump being able to draw a big crowd genuinely means nothing... no one is disputing that a lot of people are voting Trump.

It's the same old point; you have to remember that "many" and "most" are not the same thing.

Maybe I'm just jaded and overly cynical, but everyone (shown in the Sky News coverage) seems so slimey and sleazy. "Even" the Obamas.

(And no, talking negatively about the Dems isn't the same as talking up the Reps. Only one of them are currently splurged all over the news.)

Apparently she's gone down in the polls.

The UK bookmakers' odds are pretty much 50-50.

People forget that the polls at the last election had Biden ahead by double digits and it ended up being a lot closer than that, so while polls may show a trend, they also mean absolutely nothing over there

I know I am going against the grain here but despite the criticism she gets I do think she'd be a good President.

Maybe I am being sexist but I think she will bring a softer side to the job, and that she'll be able to butter up hard nosed leaders of the world with her laugh and charm.

A safer world.

i'm not convinced that Trump will actually make it to the election yet. He is old, and i don't think he is particularly well. It just feels that there are more twists and turns ahead before election day

The MSM have been given their candidate, and they're all reading from the same script.

Trump is a convicted felon. He’s also too damn old to be running for president. He looks like death and is barely coherent. Democrats did the right thing dropping Biden. Republicans have no self-awareness.

It really means nothing to us either, because our political and geographical makeup is too diverse. The camera pans with the crowds has the effect of helping to organize propaganda around those candidates, which is expected.

Our demographics are also shifting due to increased movement between the States due to economic and sociopolitical factors (mainly policy) that it's shifting quite a bit even within 5 years time. COVID also played a part in moving people further away from the cities. National media can't portray the US accurately now, even if it wants to. So it's going to be slanted coverage no matter what, because to give a sense of authority, they have to least pretend they're connected to the country they're covering It helps if they can convince themselves this is still possible...

Re:Polls water it down to a simpler measurement, but it's not conducive to an accurate description as to the dialogue of an entire country. It does give a surface view, but there's just so many factors. I still think it's fine to rely on it for an overall view, though. They capture the sentiment of the moment relatively well, as long as one doesn't read too deeply into it.

The simple reality is that they both have a similar number of supporters so comparing crowd sizes is almost completely irrelevant
She wasn't voted in it properly, so we can't say what her support is yet. They're clearly pushing her hard because they're nervous about her reception. She's running as a Democratic anti-Trump ticket, at best. (Which is fine, it's better than running a dementia-riddled candidate). We don't know her true appeal. We may not know that if and after she gets elected.

I don't disagree they can draw similar crowds. It comes down to who wants to actually appear for these things and where they do them From what I listen to in my own time, it sounds like these rallies can be like a social gathering, that is, people go to meet people who share similar values to them and just enjoy being near the energy of that candidate... some people go to find out for themselves what it's all about also. I'd considered going in the past when Obama was campaigning. Now I'm too concerned with personal safety. But I'm very conscientious.

Interesting seeing Obama making small dick jokes at trumps expense.
Classy
But wouldn’t expect anything less from a man with such little morals

if our politicians tried to do similar events here they would be laughed at, so it's all a bit alien to me. It's my (maybe simplistic) impression that americans like to be in tribes. Like there is a gays for trump group, a white men for Harris group ..... i think that is sooooooo weird
