The first part I don't find particularly relevant, an understanding of the politics and history of a given example does not rest on "being alive at the time". It can offer context and a point of view, obviously; it's not an ace up the sleeve.

As for being involved in middle-east security on an employment/professional level well I'm sorry BOTS but that outright makes banal statements like "you just love terrorists" even more uninsightful and ludicrous.
