I agree but I think what people are failing to acknowledge (either willingly or through ignorance of what's actually at play) is that your Trumps, Musks, et al. are also engaging just as fully in identity politics are the gender ideologues. It's just aimed at different aspects of identity. Just as shallow and just as fragile. Just as desperate to "be made to feel special", and absolutely lapping up the flirtation from the rich old fellas.

I read a quite interesting article earlier today about how meaningless actual policy has become in election politics (being pushed out by individualism and gotcha point-scoring performances).

I'll not bother posting it here for I feel fairly obvious reasons . We ain't that sorta forum.

Literally 30 seconds of fact checking to find out that spiking egg prices in the US are due to decreased supply (thus higher demand) caused by repeated outbreaks of bird flu across the states, meaning reduced egg yields. But hey let's not let basic free market economic principles get in the way of our angry politics eh .

It's simple supply and demand, without any pesky govt. interference. This is what the Republicans are literally all about so the whining about egg prices comes with some severe irony.

Out of interest - did you know that your pint of milk would be a wee bit more on the expensive side if it wasn't government subsidised, LT? That's socialism that is yuck.

To be fair the two things don't need to be related - it doesn't matter what causes the price increases, seeing them alongside politicians pretending to care about minorities above all else can be a bit wearisome.

High-inflation post pandemic was real though.

In my opinion, the main reason for governments getting voted out recently.

If the supporters of the sexual predator actually did a bit of research it wouldn’t be president

Indeed but nothing to do with who was or was not in power at the time or in the days following - the idea that governments can control market forces is, again, not free-market economics... which is Trump's entire platform.

If the government could take action that would "fix the price of eggs", that would be a form of socialism.

But you are essentially saying the same thing that I am;

People are voting with their emotions based on manipulative aiunbites from candidates, with little (if any) understanding of what they are or are not voting for. We're supposed to pretend otherwise because - for some reason - it's "controversial" to suggest that people who believe bucketloads of other unscientific garbage might have a poor grasp on domestic politics but 'tis whrt it 'tis... and the "politicians" know that .

Negative partisanship, where political behaviour is determined not so
much by affection for your own side as animosity towards your opponent.

It's unfair to blame any government for the high-inflation, yes - it was worldwide decisions, but at the same time it was the Dems and the left that were advocating the strongest for the Covid restrictions and lockdowns that led to it. So they have own it to some extent.

Covid's start and the initial lockdowns were under Trump.

[edit to add] I don't even mean that as a Trump-government criticism, the action that the Western World took to try to mitigate Covid - be it correct or incorrect in hindsight - was not a partisan political issue, it would have been done the same way under any government and WAS done (largely) in the same way in every country.

Was it a mistake in hindsight given A) how it went anyway and B) what we now know about how Covid spreads? Maybe so, but again, it was an unprecedented global event. It happened how it happened. Using it (and the aftereffects) for political bargaining is inevitable but meaningless - it relies on ignorance in terms of what could actually have gone differently, but again, that's exactly what we're talking about. Spinning the best tale vs actual realistic assessment of ... anything at all really.

trump won because maga were best at spinning a narrative against the dems. The dems knew that saving democracy is not something tangible and they still went for it full throttle.

Also, if Trump were such a threat, why was Biden and his administration so slow to do anything about it. Why did the dems put up a geriatric as the best person to save democracy. It just wasn't believable

the progressive part of the dems started championing ever smaller vulnerable groups, which on the face of it is a righteous cause, but it also excludes a larger and larger part of the voting population, because if they were supported by that large voting population, they wouldn't be vulnerable in the first place. It's a losing position that can't be defended.
