Like with Jamie for example they just placed him right near the three most popular contestants on the leaderboard, making it almost impossible for him to avoid the bottom two.
They did the same with Nigel last year. But I suspect Nigel was top two of the vote. So was never in danger of the dance off.

they could've on purposely undermarked Nigel too in a later stage of the competition, if he wasn't forced to withdraw due to injury

they had a lot of expectations for him week by week, while similar to Jamie now i also thought he delivered strong routines

leading up to that too dangerous charleston mary poppins routine where he injured himself, kinda the judges were to blame for that, due to huge expectations

I suspect that both Nigel and Annabel were more popular with the public than all of the final three last year.

Oh definitely. Probably top two with the public. Nigel could have won if he wasn't injured.
