The police have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of public violence during the multiple attacks on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in Amsterdam on Thursday. The man was arrested after being recognized by police on camera footage. It allegedly shows him assaulting someone, according to NOS. The suspect is in custody and is being questioned.

A large team of detectives launched a large-scale investigation on Friday morning following the riots surrounding the Ajax-Maccabi match. The detectives are focusing on analyzing camera images to identify suspects.

Five people were hospitalized, and 30 others suffered minor injuries, police said. A total of 62 people were arrested in the immediate aftermath, and ten of them were still in custody Friday afternoon. Over 800 police officers were deployed on the streets of Amsterdam prior to the football match and during the violence after.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof wrote on X that he was “horrified” by violent clashes between pro-Palestine protesters and Israeli football supporters in the Dutch capital on Thursday. He spoke of “anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli citizens” and called it “completely unacceptable.”

Many Israeli supporters will travel back to Israel on Saturday, reports the spokesperson of the Israeli embassy in The Hague.

They will travel on additional flights operated by Israeli airlines. These normally do not fly on Saturdays because of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. There are four flights to Tel Aviv on Schiphol's departure list for Saturday. Two of them have already departed.

Some of the supporters already left on Friday. According to the spokesperson, a total of 3,000 supporters are traveling back to Israel. Flights are also planned for Sunday. Three flights are on the departure list from Schiphol Airport to Tel Aviv on that day.

A spokesperson for Schiphol Airport was unable to provide any details about the additional flights, stating only that “requests for additional flights will be processed from Schiphol.

“The night after the football match between Ajax - Maccabi Tel Aviv was very turbulent with several incidents of violence aimed at Maccabi supporters. In several places in the city, supporters were attacked. The police had to intervene several times, protect Israeli supporters and escort them to hotels. Despite the massive police presence in the city, Israeli supporters have been injured. The scale of incidents, victims and arrests is now under investigation. The local authorities (mayor, police chief and chief public prosecutor) are in contact with, among others, the Dutch government, the Israeli embassy and the Jewish community in Amsterdam, who are very concerned about the situation.

This outburst of violence towards Israeli supporters is unacceptable and cannot be defended in any way. There is no excuse for the antisemitic behavior exhibited last night by rioters who actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them. The local authorities call on all victims to report to the police.

Both Israeli visitors and the Jewish community should feel safe in Amsterdam. Additional police will be on site in the coming days to monitor and control the situation. In addition, extra attention is paid to the additional security of Jewish institutions and objects.”

The police arrested three people after another night of unrest in Amsterdam, this time in the Nieuw-West district. The riot police intervened and calm had mostly returned by the end of the evening, the Amsterdam police reported on X.

The unrest started at around 7:15 p.m. on Plein ‘40-’45. A group involving dozens of people, many on scooters and fat bikes, committed vandalism, threw fireworks, and pelted cars and a bus with stones, local media wrote.

A tram caught fire after a firework was thrown into it. No one was on the tram at the time and first responders quickly extinguished the blaze.

At around 10:15 p.m., the square was accessible again because the rioters had moved on to Slotermeerlaan. There, they pelted police officers with stones, AT5 reported.

The police reported no injuries that required hospitalization. One of the rioters got hurt while setting off a firework. Paramedics treated them at the scene.

Parool reported that a boy on a bicycle got beaten up when cycling past the group. “People are agitated. The police really saved me,” he told the newspaper.

The police expect more arrests to follow. There is plenty of video footage with which investigators can identify perpetrators, a police spokesperson told NOS. Anti-Semitic insults can be heard in the videos.

Things have been restless in Amsterdam since a match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday. Riots followed the match and Maccabi supporters were chased and attacked in several places. There is also footage of Israelis instigating violence against locals. Earlier, Maccabi supporters had pulled down Palestinian flags and vandalized taxis. On Sunday, the police arrested over 50 people at a banned pro-Palestine demonstration on Dam Square.

An emergency decree is in effect in Amsterdam until Thursday. The decree bans all demonstrations and the wearing of face-covering clothing. It also gives the police more power to take preventative action, like stopping and frisking people.

A delegation of French imams, travelled to Amsterdam to firmly denounce the violent antisemitic attacks that occurred last week against Israeli football supporters.

The delegation led by Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, President of the Conference of Imams of France, accompanied by writer en Holocaust survivor Marek Halter and Chief Rabbi Moché Lewin, Vice-President of the Conference of European Rabbis (CER) and Special Advisor to the Chief Rabbi of France.

Signs in English, French, Arabic with messages like "Jews are our brothers. Together against hate" and "Muslims and Jews, united as brothers for peace" held by French imams alongside a French and a Dutch rabbi.

The delegation laid white roses at the statue of Anne Frank at the Westermarkt as ‘an unyielding symbol of the struggle against antisemitism and the necessity of peaceful coexistence among communities’. Afterwards they visited the Anne Frank House.

The delegation for peace and solidarity calls on all religious and political leaders to stand up against antisemitism and to promote constructive interreligious dialogue. They also call on all citizens to join. “Together, we must work for a world free of discrimination, where peace and tolerance prevail.”
