Bit of a catch-22 for Israel though because if they want Hamas/Palestine to be held to the international laws governing the conduct of states, they'd first have to recognise Palestine as a state. I don't see that happening any time soon.

That's not true.

Hamas committed war crimes in 7th October and continues to do so. But we only hear about war crime claims against Israel. Hamas's guilt us not dependant on what Israel thinks or does. Hamas's guilt does not depend on whether they are recognised by Israel as an independent state.
