They have this in Texas. I'm not really sure what age verification means in the context of our laws because I don't care that much about porn, but some sites got melty about it over "Free speech" and turned off the ability for people here to access it. I'm not sure what they thought they were accomplishing...

The user would need very specific browsers that can access those sites. It's not an attractive way to use the internet by any means so it naturally scares off the vast majority of people. Most users simply won't bother. Some major sites detect those browsers as being bot-like in behavior because of how they function or the networks are simply blocked, so they will get an error message instead of being able to access them. They're usually peer-to-peer connected (think using someone else's connection to connect through to the internet) and have so much functionality hobbled out from within so that those connected users are not discernible individually to the other side. So the performance is going to be total dogsh**. They may actually think it's broken before being able to access anything because it's so crippled. In other words, you wouldn't want to watch anything video through it casually It would be like using Opera Mini at points to connect to Youtube. You could theoretically watch hours of niche cat videos on it, sure, if you were worried what your ISP might think of you. But it's not what it's made for. You would use a proper way like a VPN instead.

There are legitimate reasons for people to broadcast on the dark web. For example, they're a journalist, investigative reporter or a blogger writing sensitive materials, they may want to use a specialized means to hide their tracks so would be familiar with those tools and offering alternative ways to get information out that also protect their users/readers. Hence those users who are reading your information are afraid of detection (for obvious safety reasons), so they would prefer to use the hidden links rather than the "official" pathways. For example people who live in places that aren't friendly towards free exchange of information and whose access to the web is severely limited. Law enforcement uses the same or similar tools to do investigative work, either in normal capacity or internally, so those tools are well known under that context.

I suspect the two major reasons people are motivated to use dark web-accessible browsers are 1) piracy and 2) privacy. There's also the worse elements that don't need mentioning, but I feel like they would've gotten into that before finding our the other method because they would've had to have come across a way to get to it.. either way, there are humanitarian uses for making available ways to browse anonymously. So it isn't all about accessing special websites. For hosting websites, it's a last resort for a website because it obviously limits the audience if most people don't know where to find it. But it can offer a backup method if they know their site is likely to be targeted by the authorities (thus an avenue to exchange critical information is lost)

What is the dark web? How to use Tor to access the dark web
https://www.wired.com/story/what-is-...how-to-access/

Quote:
The dark web is infamous as a dangerous place, where drugs are bought and hitmen hired, but it can be a safe way to browse the internet if your privacy is serious concern. And thanks to the Tor Browser, it's easy to do.

Indeed, Facebook, The New York Times and now even the CIA have sites on the dark web, hosting "onion" versions of their pages that can be accessed via the Tor browser. The spy agency is hoping to securely and anonymously collect tips, though its entire website, including job listings, are available on the onion service.
Speaking of the not dark web, if you want to know how nosy sites truly are, use an anonymous browser for a little bit and watch your entire experience degrade. It does make you think more safety-oriented, but also services have a fit if you don't simply hand over enough information or access to them. It can feel downright criminal... so I can understand people who are being very critical about what gets left out there online. Still most of those people use Brave, I think, because it's a lot more user-friendly.

The real issue is that this is all taking action after the horse has bolted. There are billions of porn vids and pictures already in circulation. They will just be uploaded to other sites that don't have age verification, and it's impossible to block access because they will just reappear somewhere else

I'm surely not the only one that sees this legislation as a complete farce

I think you should take it mid-wank. And post it here for our amusement.

In my view, your last line sums this issue and action up perfectly.

I'm actually left a lot of the time confused however on just what on earth are Parents doing??
How can THEY not know or SUPERVISE what their children are doing and looking at and searching for.
I'm stunned at the lack of Parent/children relationships.
There's children going to school now not operating proper hygiene of simply cleaning their teeth.
Children are now going to school with inadequate or no breakfast.
Children are left with technology ON THEIR OWN it seems for long periods every day.
With no reference back to their parents and their parents NOT having a clue what they are looking at or engaging with on their devices.
However once something goes really bad or seriously wrong and even losses of life.
Then the Parents are up in arms at anyone or anything else as to how or why it happens.

I honestly think another policy needed is to actually have an education centre, to actually EDUCATE parents on full responsible parenting.
I know what my parents were like as to me, ensuring I did right and what I was doing.

There's nothing to really be as careful about because it's not like there's a Dark Web version of Google (it's all self-report/specific crawl jobs). And even if there were, it'd still probably manage to be far less evil than the legitimate Google. Jokes aside... They'd have to find a link somewhere on the "good internet" in most cases to get to anything problematic. I'd be more weary of hanging around random Discords... there's a reason admin err on the side of caution and will nuke entire servers (including permanuking accounts using them) rather than try to figure out who "the good ones" actually are.

You can use an anonymous browser though if you need to self-report your recent stint in Antifa to the police and to the CIA. I personally advocate this use case. Please use this function judiciously to report your terrorismings

The impact on the porn industry in their own words when Supreme Court approved age verification laws...

The Scam of Age Verification
https://pornbiz.com/post/17/the_scam...e_verification

Quote:
...

What will happen?

We’ll have to implement AV wherever it is legally mandated. It’s not like we have a choice. Legal challenges were our only option — but now, even the courts have been swept up in the hysteria.

The largest established adult sites, such as ours, will be immediately destroyed.

We know that only about 10% of the user base will remain after AV is implemented — and the 10% who stay (thanks, by the way) are very costly to verify.

So much so that we expect to operate at a financial loss.

[Added July 4th] Here are real numbers that are the results of currently running AV tests :
July 4th : verification rate : 10,5% (89,5% of users gone)
July 3th : verification rate : 9,7% (91,3% of users gone)
July 2nd : verification rate even lower due to technical issues.
However, keep in mind that the drop of users is (maybe significantly) higher than shown, because the ones who simply don't return (because they know there is an AV wall), are not counted.
