Bill Maher is safe because he's actually funny while still being very tasteful. I don't know his ratings (he's reliant on HBO subs) but he is well-regarded by people from across the vast majority of the spectrum. He's not consolidated his craft down to some very narrow niche. I suspect a lot of the reason he does branch out as much as he does and talks to different people is because it keeps him both creatively and intellectually sharp.

He will still be around for a while yet, I think.
