Two men arrested over Louvre heist…

Two men have been arrested over the Louvre Museum theft which saw eight of France’s priceless crown jewels stolen.

One of the suspects was arrested at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight following last week’s seven-minute heist.

The suspect was reportedly caught trying to board a flight to Algeria, Le Parisien reported.

Both of the suspects are originally from Seine-Saint-Denis in Paris.

The pair are allegedly part of the masked gang of burglars who broke into the Louvre museum last Sunday before stealing €88m (£76m) worth of jewellery.

The gang made their getaway from the world-famous museum on a truck-mounted lift which had been stolen from the nearby town of Louvres.

Sources previously told The Telegraph that detectives were investigating the theft as an inside job.

The gang is believed to have been given sensitive internal information about the museum’s security system in advance of the raid.

A source said: “There is digital forensic evidence that shows there was co-operation with one of the museum’s security guards and the thieves.

“Sensitive information was passed on about the museum’s security, which is how they were aware of the breach.”

The two suspects were arrested as part of an investigation into “organised theft” and a “criminal conspiracy”, which is being led by the Paris anti-banditism brigade (BRB) and the central office for combating trafficking in cultural property.

In total, thieves stole about €88m worth of jewels last Sunday, including a necklace Napoleon Bonaparte gave to Marie-Louise of Austria, the tiara, necklace and earrings of Queen Hortense, and a diadem, diamond bow brooch and reliquary brooch that once belonged to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III.
