The more I see about what’s happening in Minnesota the more sick I feel. So may US citizens arrested unlawfully, so many people being assaulted. Armed men going round asking people for papers. I am so sorry for America and its people. It truly is horrific.

Hopefully the World will continue to boycott the country to send a clear message.

That's not how it works. The administration may back off a bit, but ICE is FEDERAL law enforcement so they are working around the clock. Immigration laws are meant to always be enforced. The only reason they're in the streets like this to begin with is because the local govt are refusing to allow them to pull people safely who are already detained.

The activists are looking for where there is the most heat. The sanctuary cities put up a fight and it causes scenes like this that they capitalize on. They're trying here to make that kind of rhetoric more popular by going and having "press conferences", but the sightings I've seen are things like SWAT or the DEA. That is most people don't even know whether it's ICE or not (sightings of them are that rare on average), they just see a military-style vehicle and think "oh they're here to kidnap the illegals"...

TiBB is a great litmus test for how well the propaganda works because virtually no one here has had any contact with law enforcement within the US, so almost 100% of their perception of the US is granted to them by our national media.

The arrest numbers—which were reported by other publications, including Chron—instead applied to the Houston AOR, or Area of Responsibility, a 54-county area beyond the city of Houston along the Gulf Coast.

The New York Times issued the correction last Tuesday, clarifying that the record covered the larger region, not solely the city of Houston. The majority of the reported arrests came from Montgomery County. Harris County accounted for 650 arrests from jails and prisons and 100 arrests in the community.

Harris County jails have assisted in transferring those in county custody for alleged crimes to ICE in the past. However, this past practice, coupled with new tactics under the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration, accounts for the reported number of ICE arrests.

Despite the clarification, some city and county officials dispute the degree to which ICE is present and operating locally, including Whitmire's own initial denial that the Houston Police Department was cooperating with the federal immigration agency. Months later, he publicly admitted that HPD was working with ICE.

Whitmire himself has remained largely silent about the correction, barring highly selected interviews, and his office's tagging of a Chron reporter and the Houston Chronicle editor of Opinion and Community Engagement in the correction-related tweet.

"I have been responsible. I am following state and city laws. The people who are saying speak out—that would only harm the people that they claim to be concerned about," Whitmire told What's Your Point host Greg Groogan last week. "I could get after ICE, I could get after the White House—and the next week—Minnesota, Minneapolis is getting 2,000 ICE officers."

Whitmire claimed HPD came in contact with 74 individuals, did background checks, and found that ICE had warrants for their arrests, and HPD, by law, had to contact them.

"We're not ICE, we're not immigration," Whitmire added. "I have empathy for people who are fearful, but I want everyone to know that you can call HPD."

Our mayor is doing the right thing behind the scenes to limit disruption and he is very moderate, but he has to be very careful not to upset the far left side of his party by admitting they actually take care of the problem... pretty sad...

This group appears, increasingly, to be driven by their unhappiness with the party in power, according to Gallup's analysis. That's a dynamic that could be good for Democrats in this year’s midterm elections, but doesn’t promise lasting loyalty. Independents have gravitated toward the Democrats over the past year when asked which party they lean toward, Gallup found, but attitudes toward the party haven’t gotten warmer. That suggests that the Democrats' gains are probably more related to independents’ increasingly sour views of President Donald Trump.

Younger people, in particular, are rejecting the parties at much higher rates than older generations. More than half of Generation Z and Millennials identify as political independents, while a majority of older generations side with a party. That’s different from the past, when more young adults identified with the Democrats or the Republicans. And it’s part of the reason why frequent, dramatic swings in political power may become increasingly normal.
