Most of the time it's just the truth that older Media was better.

Some things were better, some things were worse, some things have their own distinct quality-trajectory over the years/decades and characteristically fluctuate in quality, often still capable of just as much gold as they were “back in the day”, if not more-so. I can see your point tbf.

My opinions vary on each industry that I follow as to why I think that previous decades were better.


Music - Overall better vocal talent, Music beats in general were more infectious, and lyrical content could be more interesting pre-2016. For example I always enjoy the lyrics to Eminem's Stan and Hozier's Take Me To Church.


TV Shows - More episodes in a Season which could leave more room for experimentation in the writing, plus it helped the characters be better developed imo than these 6 to 8 episode seasons. Plus you didn't have to wait two or three years for the next Season of a Show that you liked back in the golden age of TV.


Reality TV - More controversial comments were allowed to be made back then which made for more bold TV. Plus there was less Misandry back in older Reality TV Shows (and Media in general tbf) that could really be mentioned as a problem for nearly every industry bar Japanese Anime currently.


Movies - Tbf to Movies I do actually think that they're trying to fix a lot of their problems that they developed during the Marvel age of Cinema. But it's still not at the level of pre-Marvel domination imo. But kudos to them for at least trying.



Western Animation/Cartoons - 99% of it looks appalling imo, granted I haven't watched most of them, but that's because I know that they don't appeal to me in the same way that South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show, Spongebob Squarepants, Futurama, Gravity Falls, Phineas & Ferb, and Martin Mystery all did back in the day, plus a myriad of other classics that I would be here all day mentioning.


Japanese Anime - Very plot light and character development is very shallow in the modern stuff compared to the older stuff imo.


And nearly all of the industries nowadays just have too much gross content in them for me. like to use Pluribus as an example, I really didn't find it pleasant to see the woman licking multiple Doughnuts and then packaging them to a customer, I understand what they were going for, but it could've been implied rather than having to show it in this particular case, because who is getting entertained by someone licking Doughnuts?

To me, Family Guy was never GOATed so I can just get with it, whatever the season, and appreciate that, like shows like The Simpsons, it always tends to reflect the social culture and big nationwide/global events of each era (like Covid, say; like Ozempic-craze, which has certainly featured in The Simpsons). Even The Simpsons, I manage to enjoy across seasons, and the Disney-era is one of the better eras since Scully (the guy who brought The Simpsons out of its golden age, in the late ’90s. Even there, I’m not a golden-era (seasons 3 to 8 in the case of The Simpsons) purist kind of fan, so I’m down with the funk of it every season, some more than others. And that’s a revolutionary show that shaped cartoons. Family Guy, by contrast, has always been a show about awful, cruel, narcissistic people doing awful things without the moral ballast of them fundamentally being good people underneath all the chaos, like Homer Simpson.

Family Guy has never thrived to the same extent. It’s a very mean-spirited show and if anything I feel like it’s improved compared to the earlier seasons, where Stewie was less layered/endearing than just-plain menacing and psychopathic. I know people complain about my Brian (funny I should have him as an avatar, but I’ve used him like that for at-least 14 years now) and how he’s become more of a pseudo-intellectual, arrogant douche than the genuine grounded intelligence he brought nearer the beginning of the show, but that’s by-the-by. At one point, Brian was ‘dead’ but luckily they reversed that ridiculous situation. That’s enough for me. But in-general, Family Guy is a show I always take with a pinch of salt. Obviously, whatever it was in the ’90s, it was, but I don’t use that as the blueprint of what the quality of the show should be. It’s always been a nonsense-show anyway, and always had very, very morally questionable beginnings. I’ve definitely become more ambivalent in terms of how I feel about this show over the last year or two. Even before that, I already knew that Family Guy was never GOATed or rightly influential in the way The Simpsons was, but my spirit’s come to find Family Guy’s own, fundamental spirit more and more distasteful of-late. It’s kinda cool, but then it isn’t.

I like Family Guy a fair bit (although my Brian-Griffin aesthetic attachment would suggest more than that) but compared to The Simpsons (a true zeitgeist), it’s actually a terrible show, full of terrible people. After a certain point, Peter’s destructive idiocy and everyone piling in to abuse Meg., not least of all for her supposed looks (she’s actually a pretty average-looking teen.) becomes more distastefully annoying than entertaining. It’s not a show that seems interested in ever getting truly better. Just louder and constantly updating, keeping up with the culture on-which some of the fifty gags per episode can be based. The baseline was already morally ugly. It never reached the same acclaim as the best adult-cartoons. Family Guy’s just … Family Guy. There was never any golden age to speak of in the first place. And Peter’s …well, Peter just being the way he is drives me up the wall. Homer Simpson is fundamentally lovable and loving in return to people besides his wife. Peter is closer to being a narc., just a comedically exaggerated buffoon of one. At this point, I actually hate him. I know it’s “just a cartoon” but still. People can find certain elements of Family Guy, if not the whole show, objectionable for all sorts of reasons.

Lois Griffin is a bit of a narcissist herself and highly toxic either way but yes. She could’ve done so much better than Peter. Like I say, it’s obvious that Homer isn’t just besotted with Marge while not giving a crap about anyone-else besides his beer-drinking buddies. Even in season 1, when he was less of a doughnut-bumbling idiot and a bit blunter and angrier across the board (albeit nowhere-near as abrasive as in the Tracey-Ullman shorts, where everyone but Abe was alien and hollow anyway, in those silly sketches), he had real pathos (especially in season 1, which was allowed to have a less explicitly funny and more somber, depressing vibe compared to season 3 onwards) and a genuine desire to provide for his family and show love. I never got that feeling with Peter. He’s just there to be a hapless agent of bumbling chaos who’s one step away from cheating on Lois every day, and he certainly doesn’t care that much about his children, at-least day-to-day, when they’re not making a special case-in-point about him actually being capable of parental love. He’s just there to be another in a long list of people who take zero accountability for what they do and say and never face too many consequences of their actions. He’s just there to be a delivery-system for absurdity and cutaway gags.

The Meg thing is what I really don’t get. Characters in that show view her as almost repulsive to look at but as an individual viewer, I don’t see it. She’s just plain/average-looking, not ugly in the way we’re supposed to think. Maybe that’s part of the point and the very joke of it; whatever; but either way, I don’t get it, no-cap. There’s no acne on her, she’s not even a little overweight and … yeah. She’s just an average-looking 16-year-old on a show where everyone wears the same clothes every day anyway, so we can’t even use her apparent sense (or lack thereof) of fashion as a barometer for her potential attractiveness, but even the default-costume isn’t ugly. She’s just an average-looking, kinda-smart, self-conscious teenager. I don’t get why she has to be the butt of all jokes and treated like a piece of poo you wouldn’t even feed to the vicious pitbull who scratched your 3-year-old in the park. I don’t get what’s supposed to be so repulsive about her. She’s probably one of the most normal characters in the show (which admittedly isn’t saying much).
