My old university doesn't even appear in the latest league tables. ...for some reason.

Also, I'd dispute the relevance of some of the criteria they use to compile the tables. I mean 'entry standards' - what has that got to do with how good the university course is? Sounds more a measure of how good students were at school, nothing to do with the Uni.

Also 'completion'... surely that depends on the motivation of the students in the first place. At the top universities it's going to be higher given the higher entry standards and different backgrounds of the students. It all seems a bit skewed to me.

Loughboro higher than Nottingham? Why are Bristol so low? In my day they were a top 5 uni.

I'm going to University of Manchester. No idea if that's a silly uni but they want some tough grades out of me.

LOL, I love how Sree was talking about his 'good university' as if it was on a par if not better than Oxford.

Also his comments about Freddie not coming across well in light of his wish to become an MP. Didn't Sree say he wanted to be an MP? Hmmmmmm.

LOL, he did you're right. Can this guy truly be as clueless as I think he is? He's a bit too good to be true.

Liars always get caught out. They can't remember what they say from one minute to the next.

Unless you know what you want to do with life its pointless going. Otherwise you'll get into debt for nothing and have a degree that is essentially worthless. If you apply for a job unrelated to a degree (which is inevitable if you just go to Uni for the sake of it), the thing employers look at is A Levels, degrees become irrelevant.
I kind of disagree with you there. Any degree you do, there are valuble skills you learn which you do not from doing just A-levels, and thats what can set you apart from other candidates. But yes, I agree that you must have a career direction to get the most out of a degree.
It doesn't, I've done recruitment at 2 companies and I can honestly say a degree has no bearing on a decision for the job. It might be good for personal reasons if you learn skills etc but it has pretty much zero impact when setting you apart. But A Levels do have quite a bearing because your grades and subjects say a lot about you especially as they're supposed to be the hardest qualifications to get.

I think people who go just for the sake of it devalue degrees as a whole.

hertfordshire is one of the better new uni's acording to the independant.

The University of Hertfordshire is the most improved University in The Complete University Guide league tables, published today in the Independent newspaper.

Placed 54 out of 113 universities, Hertfordshire is ranked second of all the new universities in the UK. The Independent comments that Hertfordshire is “proving that ‘new’ universities can out perform ‘old’ ones”.

The league table reveals that Hertfordshire has spent more money on facilities than any other University. Much of this investment has gone towards enhancing the student and community experience with spending on sports facilities, which are open to students, staff and the community. Other funds have been spent on the Uno bus service and student parking, wardens for student halls of residence and on-campus security.

Investment has also been made on the University’s careers guidance services, with the opening of Graduate Futures last month (13 March 2008). This unique network offering employment and career development support to graduates throughout their lifetime is based in the University’s new business hub on the Hatfield Business Park.

The Good University Guide judges institutions on nine measures: student satisfaction, research assessment, entry standards, degree results, completion rates, job prospects, the student/staff ratio, spending on academic services such as libraries, and spending on facilities such as careers and health services.

Professor Tim Wilson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire said: “We are delighted with this result. We are proud to be an ambitious institution that is known for putting the experience of our students first and this good position in the sector highlights our achievements.”

The league table is compiled by Bernard Kingston, the stalwart of university league tables, in association with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The full details are published in today’s Independent newspaper or can be found online: www.thegooduniversityguide.org.uk

I got into Stirling Uni and Edinburgh Uni to do accountancy and finance law but I never went. I decided a week before freshers week that uni wasnt right for me and I would rather work and study if I needed to. But now I am more interested in my family and doing things just for me. Not living for a career.

The good thing about Freddie is that he shows that no matter how highly regarded a Uni is, they will still let in complete prats.
