I take your point about your mate saying that he wouldn't buy Vanessa's record even if he liked it, because it's by her, but isn't it really just the same thing to say that you would definitely buy it, without even having heard it, just because it's by her?

Excatly was I was going to say. It's a fair point to say it's sad that your friend won't buy Vanessa's CD just because it's by her, but surely that makes you equally as sad for only buying it because it's by her, and not on the basis of pure talent (if she has any)?
