I couldn't care less if it was pointless, for the cameras, for the highlight show or whatever. I actually would prefer it if housemates decided to actually do things deliberately for the cameras. After all, that is what they are there for.

The real reason is that they were bored, hungry and already had some glimmers of fun with the previous housemates coming in. When you're sitting around all day, quite basically many things seem funner than they used to.
