For the first time permission as been given for Television company's to show/advertise products on British Television shows.
For years aired programs have not been allowed to, BB always puts stickers over the products, Tee Shirts slogan, Soaps show products with labels facing away from Camera.
Under new rules, if advertisers pay for the product to be shown they can now do it.
And it's worth Millions to them.
BB as the potential to be in the Big Earners making it very viable to keep it going.

Not really. Considering how many US shows are watched here with high ratings, I don't see how anyone is adversely affected. So instead of seeing a can with a COLA sticker on it, we see a can of coke. Or rather than seeing a jacket or hat with tape across it, you will be able to see the Nike swoosh or whatever.

What does ratings have to do with it?

I can understand why it wouldn't be such a bad thing regarding TV shows that sensibly place products in, and yeah, its normallly clothing/drinks/food brands. Yet, I can't see how some programs wouldn't then start needing this to finance themselves (as BB is mentioned), but then when does it mean that instead of a cutaway to the garden with birds singing, it doesn't cut to a can of coke.

Do you think there is a difference between subliminal messaging and product placement.

Will the BBC be allowed to do it? What happens about the TV licence if so?

Big companies that have the money and the power can drive smaller business out with product placement as it does have an effect, is that such a good thing (especially in this country where most of the big companies aren't even domestically owned anymore) and we buy more American products and Japanese products that have the financial backing rather than the small independent ones.

Big business operate in a greedy way, why should we allow them another avenue to strangle the market place by over dominance?

Yeah, but the TV companies know that people do this (as do the ad companies) wouldn't that just encourage them to blitz the programs with PP?

The American TV shows have more ad breaks to keep you watching, could this happen here as well. They don't have ad breaks between programs as thats when you might change station, but they do have more during the shows, is this the way we want British TV to go?

Its not definate yet, its expected to be announced over the next week. Even if the ban is lifted for ITV etc, it will remain in place for the BBC, so no licence fee reductions - Ba****ds

It will be interesting to see how they deal with it in BB, will they allow all products to be displayed and give prominence to any that pay for placement, or do they blank out only those that havent paid? Booze would still have to be covered though especially if the medical profession force though the blanket ban on alcohol advertising.

OP you are forgeting 1 or 2 things= C4 will not be renewing the contract with endemol end of! and no other TV station wants anything to do with Big brother, the show as come to a natural death millions have turned off advertisers have pulled out because the show is not pulling in the viewers it once use to. ask your self this? would you waste your advertising revenue on a failing show? sorry that's bad business practice - advertisers are pulling away from BB and not trying to join the show, ever since the jade and the racism row big companies have wanted nothing to do with the show virgin, O2 ect.. now its lucozade next year who will it be? the fish and chip shop down the road?
