War isn't as simple as that, and it's almost never for straightforward self protection. Again, the commandment states 'Thou Shalt Not Kill', I didn't know it had a footnote.

I'm sure war is mentioned in the bible, the old testament at least, but from my catholic upbringing, war was never mentioned as going against our religeon

War is mentioned many different times. But obviously war back then was very different to war now. It's such a colored and complicated issue. I just think things like your Catholic upbringing is not exactly a definite authority on such a colored issue. It's certainly not as black and white as 'Shoot to defend = Good'.
