Question A moritorium on political posting?

In light of the General Election being called, and because politics can be a contentious issue leading to arguments and people being banned on grounds of civility etc, should me now have a moritorium on discussing UK politics until after 06 May.

This would also prevent TIBB being hijacked by people from the political parties.

On the forum where I am a moderator we have a no politics rule in order to prevent such problems.

Going by your logic then, when BB11 starts, we should also have a moritorium on discussing it because the forum posts could be hijacked by organised betting syndicates or followers of one housemate or another might cause arguments etc.

Good call Sticks.

Shashown has a point... did you see how feral this place got during CBB7? Lots of people having an agenda and everyone suspecting one another of having an agenda. This place is no picnic during a BB series and I doubt the run up to the election will be anywhere near as bad.

For the record the forum I am a moderator on is not a church forum, it is an astronomy and aerospace forum which also has a strict no religion rule as well.

I do see the point Shasown makes about arguments during a BB campaign, but house mates do not have organisations supporting them like political parties and as for betting syndicates they tend to operate by trying to scam people into voting like the way they supposedly did for Spencer in Spencer Versus Alex in BB3.

Plus if we allow on political party to post here, we would be duty bound to allow extremist parties to post as well. This is why where I live we do not allow any political posters on our notice board.

So long as posts arent abusive, overly racist, sexist, or any other -ist why censor them, do you not believe in freedom of speech and the right to express oneself?

Isnt that a bit Fascist?

But to use an old quotation, Freedom of speech does not entitle one to shout fire in a crowded theatre (When there is no fire)

Attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr, however the intent behind it is easily countered, if there is a fire burning and there is an imminent threat, one is actually obligated to yell fire and warn others. To put the quote in its true context it was actually said that the First Amendment would not protect a person "falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic." So if you intend to use a quote, dont paraphrase it to support your own argument.

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. George Washington

To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker. Frederick Douglass

Next.... (me - just now)
