The one thing that favours a workable coalition is the personalities of the two party leaders which are actually more similar than dissimilar in terms of background and life experiences (unlike Brown and Clegg lol). Brown must be about to spontaneously combust as he watches his dreams of glueing himself to Cleggy boy go down the toilet.

What everyone has forgotten in all of this is the Monarch's constitutional right to influence the outcome, and she is more than likely to agree to a minority Tory government should Cameron request to go it alone. The precedence for this is the 1974 election when Ted Heath (the then PM), with only 297 seats, was unable to reach an agreement with the Liberal leader, Thorpe who had won 14 seats, and Heath resigned. Harold Wilson then formed a minority government with only 301 seats. Six months later there was another General Election and Wilson was returned to power with a small majority.
