Well in Daves' case it was just him being lame by joining the others in laying into Ben who he is supposed to be a loyal friend of. JJ was just insulting him a little.

But Nathan is a bully. He's subtle but he's a bully. He's not a proper nasty bully, but he just enjoys putting people down who he doesn't like, perhaps cos' of a certain way they are (like the unique oddness that is Ben). He jumped on this opportunity to be mean to Ben. He commented that he wanted to see Ben cry, whilst Ben was sitting right near him in the same room.
