Dave told JJ he was joking about them being popular on the outside, he was winding JJ up.
I believe he genuinely cares for her.

Well she did something to him during early morning live feed and he was annoyed with her. She ended up looking up at the ceiling and sucking her thumb. He turned over and tried to go to sleep.
Then she started talking again. She knows that it is in her interest to keep after him. However it has cost her winning the show. She would have won if she had just kept on sparring with him.
