People have been gay since the beginning of time, but it's a more open society nowadays, being white is technically a 'retardation' as humans are supposed to be black. As for your right brain wrong genitals argument, that is transsexualism and a different topic, gay people have no desire to be of the other gender. Lesbians do not have useless breasts, they still work but they may not be put to personal use same for the sperm of gay men, but I may refer you to surrogate mothers and sperm donation, both of these still render a purpose, unlike your brain which has difficulty breaking out of the medieval view point.
