I've always wondered, I think more recently, as to why you are not allowed to say it on TV? I mean yes it's a swear word, but don't get why it's so much worse than the other ones. I think they allow it when a film it on but just not shows (Noticed on BB) So why?

I think we just agree on swear words just to have them. They make the other words seem more respectable.

And I guess people would complain if it was said on tv. Also I think the c word is top of the list of banned words at the bbc.

Thinking about it, the only time i think I have ever heard cnt on tv was on shameless...ever :/

Theres a Ray Winston film (forget it's name) that says it all the way through. Makes me laugh more than being offended. It is a horrific film but not due to the language!

I've heard it on a few films and in a few 18 rated stand up comedy performances

Yeah ***** seems to have been elevated above the other swear words in terms of severity for some reason.

A couple of years ago at school a teahcer heard me jokingly call somebody one and I got into all sorts of trouble which wouldnt have happened with pr*ck,w*nker etc. She said it was only the second time she'd heard the word used in 10 years of teaching

I remember when Caprice said it on GMTV or This Morning when she was doing "The Vagina Monologues" and nobody batted an eyelid, even the presenters were just nodding away as they do.

Later that afternoon and the next day though it was mental, all over the papers and she was expected to make a personal apology and stuff. Mad.

The word has been around since around the 13th century and was originally used as a factual term for a woman's vagina. It was used quite freely in literature and normal conversation for hundreds of years. As to when it started to become a taboo word, it could have something to do with a street in London that was called Gropecunt Lane, which was a stamping ground for prostitutes, and it may be that the word **** began to be associated with prostitution, and calling someone a c-u-n-t then became a derogatory term firstly towards women, but now used as a term of abuse towards either sex.

So the simple anatomical description of a body part has evolved into a term of abuse that is somehow deemed to be the most offensive word you can call someone. Like most terms of abuse, the word itself is innocuous - it is the meanings and connotations of that word that cause offence. I can think of many other words that were once originally innocent words to describe an object or person, which have now been imbued with offence, for example, words like moron or spastic. The N word is a case in point, probably THE most taboo word now. It originally came from the anthropological term to describe a race of people, but began to be used in a derogatory and racist way, culminating in the derivative N word which is used offensively to demean and belittle black people on the grounds of their race.
