Having said that, Mary doesn't really deserve a place in the Final...

I get what you mean. I've not really connected with any of the finalists this year despite watching the show religiously, I just don't really like any of them that much so I find that I'm watching it objectively - I don't think there is a new popstar among any of this bunch. I think Rebecca has the makings of a fantastic singer who is well known outside of the UK, I think if One Direction had a different line up (i.e. they kept Liam, Harry and maybe Zain + two different members) they could be a reasonably marketable boyband with a shelf life beyond the X Factor, Matt could be an extremely successful male solo artist
if he injected a bit of personality into anything he did, unfortunately I just find him very boring, even more so than Rebecca. Mary's probably the most likeable out of them all and does have something to say for herself, but she's boxed herself into a very limited style of music, and Cher completely undermines her talent by being really unlikeable.
I don't really know who will make the final four, nor do I really care. I think Rebecca, Matt and Mary need the contract more than Cher or One Direction because the latter two are young and Simon likes them enough to give them contracts regardless. Rebecca, Matt and Mary all really need to make the top 2 because otherwise they're going to fade into obscurity, meaning at least one of them is going to be sorely disappointed after this is all over. None of the three of them are giving us anything we haven't seen before, but they're infinitely more talented than Cher or One Direction who are a bit more exciting but less talented.
This year's X Factor confuses me.
