Erm it's not even #1 on iTunes? Yes it's done well but it doesn't guarantee a number one single. The reception to it has been lukewarm, it's being played lots on radio yes but S&M has had strong airplay for weeks now, way before the remix was released. There's some radio stations that are refusing to play the remix though because they dislike the Britney edit. There's a strong chance it will get to #1, I can see that but Rihanna has a habit of gradually climbing to #1 in America, so S&M would have probably gotten there regardless of the remix.
