Well..... I am going to say that I used to feel so sorry for her.
Now? I can honestly say that there comes a point when feeling sorry for someone no longer 'cuts it' with me. Why? Having lost one parent - a father who took his own life, and a mother who attempted it dozens of times: I can say first hand, the utterly devastating effect it has on the 'child'. for the child, it says that the parent sees their happiness / their problems as being far greater, far more important than the child or the 'impact' it will have on the child. (rightly or wrongly.... ). One major one being, "did they love me so little that they would want to leave me, making me feel I wasn't enough, that I couldn't help, that maybe I was to blame, and with so many questions that will forever haunt, and never be answered". She has a priviileged life compared to a great many others. There is only a certain degree of sympathy I am willing to afford - and whilst appreciating none of us are aware of the 'full ins and outs'.... I'm losing any sympathy I had for her. Sorry folks.... but I'm a product of what it feels like on the 'receiving end' of such loss / effect..... and I can only put over 'another side to the coin'. Edit: when I say 'privileged' life: she has had her hard times, very hard times, but so too have many every day folk who haven't had access to fame, fortune, loving family for support etc. We all have hard times, serious illnesses that try to destroy us psychologically: not everyone has the ability to pay bills, have nice houses, clothes, people around us who care etc. Last edited by Pyramid*; 21-05-2011 at 10:27 AM. |

I'm a 'big grown up' adult (supposedly!!) - and when all this happened it was from my mid 30's till only pretty recently - so I can 'see' both sides. Initially when people inferred that my dad took the cowards way out.... I shot them down in flames and thought that it was a 'brave thing'.... still caught in between - but as time goes on, I don't want to think it's a selfish thing.....because that's thinking bad of parents. I'm aware the person wants the 'hurt' to stop, not nec their 'life' ...just to stop the hurt and that's the only way they can see how to stop the hurt/pain/worry etc.... but ultimately: it affects us all in different ways: and it's only after it and it all sinks in, that such 'thoughts' can (Can, not always) surface for the 'those left'. I'm pretty level headed, and NEVER EVER thought I'd not be able to accept something I couldn't change - but it does have very lasting impact on those 'left behind'. Mix that with a love for the parent (ie: I wouldn't want them to be so desperately unhappy and if this is how they needed to obtain that, who am I to judge)...... it's a real mixed bag of worms. guess all I'm trying to say is: it's not just a one sided 'Feel sorry for the person in the 'spotlight' - aka the person wanting to end their lives) - there is a whole lot more affected than ever is given acknowledgement or consideration for. All the 'ahh....feel so sorry' always goes to the suicidal person...... when there can and is, little understanding of how such actions affect those surrounding/linked to the person who wishes / or is successful in such attempts. Am I wanting sympathy? Not at all - it's me simply trying to convey a very small amount of the 'hell' that those left, have to deal with - that they didn't ask for (if that makes sense). Yet those persons are not considered - the affect on 'those' persons is never spotlighted. when it's those survivors who have to carry a burden that can never ever be shared, addressed or given closure. It's not quite as 'cut and dried' as it seems (as are many things in life eh!) Life goes on....and that is the very important thing. We are ALL worth giving it a go.... regardless. |

Not quite sure who you are addressing this to, but I will answer, should it have been addressed to me.
I thought she was FAB. Had total respect for her, the houses of parliament nude photo, her getting it on with her hubby (chris??), felt heart sorry for the relationship breakup , and almost 'felt' her distress with alopecia. (because one of my friends suffered the same) - why? Because she did seem to be getting a hard run at life with all the crappy breaks...... esp in the public eye. It's hard enough when it's done within one's own 'quite life' so to have it splashed all over and reported everywhere must be horrific to deal with on top of what is going on. However, the ongoing attempts when she had a child.... sorry....that's where she continued to cross the line for me. If you can't see another side of the coin, that's entirely your perogative, but it's rather shallow of you to make an assumption on my thoughts on Gail, when in fact ... you are very wrong. How can I put this eloquently? Gail has a very 'childlike' look to her (pre Alopecia days).... that naturally evokes the human instint to 'protect' - as physically, she appears very childlike and vulnerable - blonde hair, big eyes, 'baby face'.... it is genetically inbuilt to protect the vulnerable and 'childlike' and that's always how Gail came across. Add to that , the heartbreak, her appearance with alopecia etc: and that then can 'reinforce' the protection to the vulnerable instince that is within us. We have to be very aware though: that such appearance can be (and are) very very deceptive and can be played upon....... ie: the person knowing this, and them being very aware of how they evoke such feelings/ responses. We ALL know of people at work, at play, or in our social groups, who can get away wtih things that others, simply wouldn't - often because of how they are portrayed, which may in fact, be a red herring. That's all I'm saying......... there are 3 sides to every story. His, hers, and then 'what really is' the story. I think sometimes standing back and taking in the 'full picture' needs to be considered. Not always, but sometimes. Do I deny that Gail is suffering? Absolutely not. Not at all. What I do suggest however, is that she is focusing on herself now - rather than looking at the 'full picture'. Only my opinion of course, everyone and 'every case' is very much an individual one. |
