An X Factor contestant tipped to reach the competition's final stages has been axed after losing their voice at Boot Camp.

The mystery male contestant was eliminated by judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland and Louis Walsh in a "heartbreaking" decision when he contracted laryngitis.

"It was a really heartbreaking moment when the judges had to let this kid go," a source told The Mirror. "He was amazing in his first audition and was picked out as one to watch almost immediately. When he got to Boot Camp he sailed through the first elimination round.

"But the following morning he woke up and his throat was so bad he could hardly talk. The judges thought long and hard about what to do and even *considered putting him through on the basis of his previous displays.

"But they decided it wouldn't be fair on the other contestants and they sent him home. It was tough, but at the end of the day this is an unforgiving industry."

Reports emerged this weekend that Contostavlos axed a group from The X Factor for breaking a Judges' Houses sex ban.
