Technically Scarface is the better film but I've never been much of a fan of it. I think it's quite overrated and I hate gangster films anyway.

Even if I had seen Scarface, I would probably still vote Scream. There's just something monumental about that opening sequence. Nothing comes close.

Critically it's pretty much on the money. I know it has an 80-something rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But with the general movie going public, it’s underrated. This is not to say that the majority of people didn’t enjoy the film (which, I’m guessing, is your reasoning for why you think it is overrated), it’s just that most people would consider it just another “scary” or “dumb” horror flick without giving the film’s underlying themes a second thought.

Pretty much everyone I know, deems Scream a joke. Mostly they seem to think I'm talking about Scary Movie

Scream is definitely underrated. The writing is superb, and the story has emotional depth, modern day horrors lack. And back when it was released, was genuinely scary.

Horror's nowadays, consist of zero character development and over the top blood and guts, or their recycled ghost stories.
