A guy with aspergers came on a work placement to an office I worked at last January for 6 weeks and for the first 3 weeks or so he was very quiet and shy, a few people (as you always get) were very flippant and not very nice about it. Like people don't understand and say you're ignorant etc etc.
But in the small room we were in with 4 or 5 people he gradually got more comfortable and they offered him a longer stay 3 days a week, it seemed it was just breaking the ice and then he came out of his shell more. He struggled with eye contact and using the phones a little but he could work just aswell as anyone else and really grew into his role. I left in September and as far as I know he was still there when I left but it just goes to show you can't judge people on these shallow things. We're all complex beings with our own dilemmas.
