Quand il pleut, il pleut
|
I found this very interesting......
Have you ever taken an instant dislike to someone? They haven’t done anything to you … you may have only just met them … but for some reason you just can’t stand them? If you have ever experienced this unpleasant reaction to someone, then you know it’s rarely a slow burn … the 'dislike' appears almost immediately. You may try to take a logical approach and tell yourself to give it time, but rather than fading over time as you get to know the person, the aversion grows. Take heart, this doesn’t mean you are a bad person, and more importantly, it’s not just you. According to psychologists there really is such a thing as an instant and unexplainable dislike of another person. In most cases there is no apparent reason for the feeling. Perhaps it’s a resemblance to someone in our past that we can’t even consciously recall, maybe it’s a tone of voice that reminds us of something unpleasant, or maybe you knew them in a previous life … OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but you get the idea. It could even be a feature of someones character that we can’t detect at all on the surface. It is unnerving and unusual to have an instant dislike for a person, but it does happen. has this ever happened to you? |

All the time, used to happen alot when I was younger for some reason, like I just used to look at them and think "Oh dear" sort of thing.
I've since learnt to scratch beneath the surface because NOBODY is fully as they seem on the outside. |

Yeah, usually within about 5 seconds I decide if I like someone and find it really hard to change my mind. All about the way they approach you

Yeah, but not often though.
There's this one guy at my school who's new this year and I hated him from the outset when no-one else did. Now its halfway through the year and everyone else hates him along with me, so.

I believe that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and like some of the others here, I make up my mind about people almost instantly. I won't say I'm never wrong... but if it turns out I am, it takes me a long time to warm to that person.

Yep.
And I'm pretty sure everybody else will have also had the same thing happen to them. I for one think that I've been on the receiving end of it before and as hard as you try to overcome it, you can't! |

Yes..I think we can get instant impressions...do you actually dislike them so quickly or do they just not really make an impact on you?

All depends how much time I spend with them I guess. Usually try get out of the way if possible, or I'll be short with them.

No, not usually without reason. I may think 'What a knob' after 15 minutes or so in someones company, but will always give them another chance

A few times, I give them a chance though and dont let on that Im not keen but Im usually right. Im a pretty good judge of character because Im a good observer of what goes on around me and pick up on things. I like to think anyway.
First impressions are over-rated though. Its all about if you get to make more impressions after that.

I was particularly interested in this because of Vicky's conscience thread and CBT...I believe that with an 'instant dislike', I mean quite a strong irrational one, we recognise something, some small thing in that person that has triggered a memory of something...a bad memory Last edited by Ammi; 18-02-2012 at 06:34 PM. |

Salman did you even read the OP?! It doesn't make you a bitch.
& yes I do sometimes dislike people straight away and can't warm to them. I've had it happen to me though. |

Yes a few times but also admit some people i disliked turned out to be really quite nice,so I try and give people the benefit of doubt.

Remembering Kerry
|
I am generally quite reserved when I meet someone for the first time,so maybe some people take an instant dislike to me,however I try to look for good in all people and really want to see likeable things in people, especially anyone I am meeting for the very first time.
Usually after a few meetings I know if I will like them enough to want to keep in communication with or hopefully come across again. There is only one person I know for sure that I took an instant dislike to because of an extremely bad and very rude attitude when I first came across them and that was Cheryl Cole. |
